When it comes to fashionable winter wear, Canadian designers are at the forefront of knowing what will keep you warm and chic in sub-zero temperatures.
Our current favourite purveyor of cold-weather cool is the Tuck Shop Trading Co.’s pop-up “outpost. Nestled at the back of one of our Summerhill design favourites, Love the Design, The Tuck Shop Trading Co. showcases Canadian heritage at a whole new level.
The Tuck Shop Trading Co. launched last October as an online shop. Its offerings of iconic but cozy knitted toques, capes and Cottage coats crafted from MacAusland’s or Woolrich wool, and a wide selection of cashmere goods made it an instant hit.
Who’s the creative head behind this abundance of nostalgic Canadiana? Soon-to-be mum, Lyndsay Borschke. Lyndsay found the inspiration for Tuck Shop Trading Co. by digging deep into her childhood memories. Having spent her summers working in Algonquin Park at the Taylor Statten Camp’s tuck store, Lyndsay saw a niche in the market to fill: genuine, Canadian feel-good pieces that are approachable and remind us of our own summers spent in cottage country.
Not content with national pride, Lyndsay sought to evoke neighbourhood pride as well. Residents of Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa have taken up the cause, proudly championing Borschke’s “City of Neighbourhoods” toques, tees and sweatshirts. Emblazoned with locales like Queen West, Outrement and Manotick, the line has quickly grown to cult status, and this Canadian pride is soon to expand to New York and Los Angeles – the perfect gift for expats.
The Toronto Tuck Shop Outpost is open through to the end of the year, but for your year-round dose of country-meets-the-city no matter where you live, you can find Borschke’s wares online.
