Design Trends 2014/Part 2: Shagreen

Shagreen is a rawhide of rough untanned skin, formerly made from a horse’s back or that of an onager. It is now also made from the skin of sharks and rays. Its modern revival found its way back in furniture, mirrors and home accessories in unexpected colours. It is the new luxe even though (insert sigh of relief here) it is the new faux in most cases. In fact, faux shagreen outshines and outperforms the real thing.

Shagreen gives everything a  lush exotic texture, and lends an air of sophistication even in the smallest application.  A perfect example of this is  Ivanka Trump’s bedroom with shagreen night tables.

Even Bvlgari is getting in on the act by incorporating it into their Serpenti icon collection.  Making us officially shagreen with envy.
