Design Trends 2014: Gold

To see the latest and greatest in design furnishings, Kendall Williams makes the seasonal pilgrimage to international design trade shows, braving the sensory overload in order to see the forest from the trees and identify new design trends.  While doing so, he has to contend with the dilemma of how to look stylish while wearing comfortable shoes as he traverses mile upon mile of showroom. Think fashion week except there are no Hollywood celebs or paparazzi and everyone is doing lots of eating (and drinking).

Top Design Trend #1 – Midas Touch
The pendulum has swung from chrome to gold. But not the cold brass of yesteryear. Think earthy, matte gold, rustic copper and antiqued gold leaf applique. Find these warm hues in lighting fixtures, table bases, accent furnishings, modern faucet fixtures and plush wool rugs. Some have even gone bullish in rose gold. To see how it can be done, west coast celeb designer to the celebs, Kelly Wearstler, set the gold bar high in Cameron Diaz’s NYC apartment. And whoever said you can’t mix your old silver with new gold was wrong. Precious metals are always a good investment.
