  • On a cold winter’s night, there’s nothing more comforting than a warm sip of something yummy.  One of our new favourite ways to fend off the chills is this good-for-you Chocolate Chai Tea.  It's been a lovely addition to our coffee, tea and hot chocolate repertoire, and has the added benefit of some superstar healthy ingredients.   Raw cacao is a great source of antioxidants, magnesium, iron and fibre, and ginger and coconut oil are tasty but effective cold-fighters. We suggest you enjoy with abandon. Chocolate Chai Tea INGREDIENTS: 1 cup of water tea leaves or 2 black tea bags 1 clove 1/8th of a cinnamon stick 2-3 3 slices of ginger 3 whole black peppercorns 2-3 green cardamom pods or pinch of ground cardamom 1 piece of star anise 8 oz of organic milk of choice (coconut is an excellent option) 1 oz (2 to 3 Tbsp) raw cacao or natural unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tsp coconut oil or more to taste sweetener (we like honey, but maple syrup or raw sugar would work nicely) a pinch of nutmeg (optional) a touch of vanilla bean or vanilla extract (optional) DIRECTIONS: In a small saucepan, combine the water, tea, clove, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon stick, star anise, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil then lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes until the mixture is fragrant (depending on time, steep as long as you can). Add the coconut oil, chocolate, honey, vanilla, milk and simmer for another minute then turn off the heat and let steep for 2 minutes. Pour into a cup through a fine mesh sieve and enjoy piping hot. And yes, you can cheat and use Chai tea bags - but we promise from scratch is worth the effort! Adapted from Zenbunni’s Biodynamic Chocolate Chai Tea Photo Credit: John Von Pamer/The Chalkboard
